This via ferrata doesn’t go up – it goes down. That’s no joke, and it’s definitely a change from the usual! But it’s not just the via ferrata that heads down – the steep rock faces on the way to Gimmelwald also drop quite a long way down.
The via ferrata is open exclusively from 1 June to 31 October, from 09:00 to 18:00
Difficulty
The via ferrata is graded K3 (fairly difficult) on the SAC via ferrata scale. In some sections, the route takes you over steeper rocky terrain, but it is well secured. Steep or vertical sections are made easier by ladders or iron clamps. Even on less difficult terrain, wire ropes secure the climber. Self-belaying is essential as this via ferrata is very exposed. Anyone wishing to tackle the via ferrata must be physically fit, sure-footed, have a head for heights, possess suitable equipment and have experience of mountaineering. Inexperienced climbers are advised to tackle the via ferrata with a mountain guide. Only attempt the route in good weather and when there is no risk of thunderstorms or rain. A carabiner must always remain attached to the safety rope. For safety reasons, the zip line may only be used when accompanied by a mountain guide and must remain closed at all other times. Visitors to the via ferrata are prohibited from entering the base jump platform.
The start of the via ferrata is in the car-free village of Mürren. You can reach it by taking the Schilthorn cableway from Stechelberg or the Lauterbrunnen–Mürren cable car from Lauterbrunnen. Once in Mürren, it is about a 10-minute walk along the lower village road to the Sportchalet Mürren. The start is via the tunnel on the south side of the retaining wall by the tennis courts.
