Inferno race

The number of participants is limited to 1,850, and every year several hundred hopefuls have to be turned away. The varied, unique topography is what makes this 14.9-kilometer course so appealing; it can also be skied outside of the race. All-around skiers will find this course truly rewarding, as the following excerpt from a race announcement demonstrates: "In the upper section of the course, clean downhill turns and optimal line choice are required. In the middle section, an ideal downhill position will be determined by fast gliding on the skis. From Kanonenrohr to Höhenlücke, the technically skilled downhill skier will have the edge. In the section from Maulerhubel to Winteregg, a good skating stride and arm strength can make the difference between victory and defeat. From Winteregg–Spriessenkehr to Lauterbrunnen, top-notch equipment, a clean downhill position, and—last but not least—mental tenacity will determine a strong finishing time.” Every evening, food stands and music await you at the event grounds near the Alpine Sports Center. Great viewing spots include the Mürren ski area, the finish area, or the traditional Inferno parade in the village the night before.
